Car insurance keeps climbing
Comprehensive cover costs $75 more (+6% YoY), now averaging $1,311 a year.
The Quashed Insurance Index reports New Zealand's average car, house and contents insurance premiums for Q2 2026, based on 62,800 live quotes from Market Scan, ending 30 June 2026. Car (Comprehensive) insurance averages $1,311 a year in Q2 2026, up 6% year on year and up 19% over three years. House insurance averages $2,949 a year in Q2 2026, down 3% year on year and up 34% over three years. Contents insurance averages $860 a year in Q2 2026, no change year on year and up 14% over three years. The average combined household bill for one car, one home and one contents policy is $5,120 a year. In Auckland, average premiums are $1,496 for car, $2,056 for house and $793 for contents insurance. In Wellington, average premiums are $1,128 for car, $4,492 for house and $990 for contents insurance. In Canterbury, average premiums are $1,189 for car, $2,903 for house and $906 for contents insurance. Wellington homeowners are paying almost 2.5x the house insurance bills of Aucklanders and also paying 20% more on their contents insurance bills. Auckland car owners on the other hand are paying the most for car insurance (comprehensive cover). Canterbury homeowners and car owners sit in the middle when it comes to insurance costs, between Auckland and Wellington. Quashed users comparing existing cover against the cheapest Market Scan option found average savings of $404 a year on car insurance, $809 a year on house insurance, and $296 a year on contents insurance.
