AMP Insurance NZ Review (2026): House, Contents and Landlord Insurance Compared

Updated 25 June 2026
AMP Insurance logo.

AMP is one of New Zealand's most recognised financial brands, and its house, contents and landlord insurance is underwritten by Vero, one of the country's largest insurers. In this review we lead with the numbers that matter most: live AMP quotes for house, contents, house and contents, and landlord cover, run on the Quashed Market Scan in June 2026. We then look at what AMP covers, who actually stands behind your policy, and the current AMP prize draw.

There is also a reason to look now. New AMP Home, Landlord and Car policies bought between 1 May and 24 July 2026 go into the draw to win a $2,000 gift card. The easiest way in is to compare AMP on the free Quashed Market Scan, then click through to AMP to buy. We explain exactly how the draw works further down.

Key takeaway: AMP is one of the most competitively priced insurers for house, contents and landlord cover in New Zealand, all underwritten by Vero (AA- financial strength). The pricing is sharp for the right profile, and the current $2,000 prize draw adds extra value on new Home and Landlord policies. The smart move is still to compare AMP against the wider market, which you can do in around 90 seconds on the Quashed Market Scan.

Market Scan quotes are direct from insurers. So you won't pay more with Quashed.

How much does AMP house and contents insurance cost in 2026?

In a Quashed Market Scan run on 22 June 2026, AMP quoted $208.91 a month for a combined house and contents policy for an Auckland owner-occupier, covering $700,000 of house ($1,000 excess) and $57,500 of contents ($500 excess). That was the lowest-priced option returned for this profile.

AMP house and contents insurance combines cover for your building and your belongings under a single policy, so the structure of your home and everything inside it are protected together. It is a convenient option for owner-occupiers who want one policy, one renewal date and one point of contact. Cover levels, excesses and benefits follow AMP's underlying house and contents policies, underwritten by Vero.

The quote was based on this profile:

  • Location: Auckland

  • Owner-occupied, permanently occupied home

  • Policyholder aged 55

  • House sum insured (rebuild cost, incl GST): $700,000, with a $1,000 excess

  • Contents sum insured: $57,500, with a $500 excess

For this example, combining the cover with AMP was not cheaper than holding two separate AMP policies. The combined house and contents quote was $208.91 a month, while a separate AMP house policy ($160.91) plus a separate AMP contents policy ($47.99) came to $208.90 a month together, one cent less. There was no meaningful price difference either way for this profile, so the choice comes down to whether you would rather manage one policy or two. To find your best price, compare on the Quashed Market Scan.

Because this policy includes AMP's Home cover, a new policy bought during the promotion also goes into the $2,000 prize draw.

  • Replacement and inflation/demand surge cover (with SumExtra)

  • Liability cover of $2 million ($1 million for bodily injury)

Natural disaster damage is first picked up by Natural Hazards Cover (NHCover), the government scheme run by the Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake (formerly EQC), which covers your home up to $300,000. AMP's policy covers any damage above that, up to your sum insured, and a $5,000 natural disaster excess applies to parts of your home that NHCover does not cover. On this particular quote, excess-free glass cover was not included, so check what is standard for your policy.

What is AMP's SumExtra benefit?

SumExtra is one of the standout features on AMP's house cover, and it tackles the single biggest risk in home insurance: underinsurance. On a standard sum insured policy, your payout is capped at the figure on your schedule, so if rebuild costs have risen and your home costs more to rebuild than you are insured for, the shortfall is normally yours to fund. SumExtra is built to help close that gap, and here is how it works at claim time:

  • For loss or damage from any cause other than a natural hazard, such as fire, SumExtra covers the full replacement cost of your home, even if that cost is more than your sum insured.

  • For loss or damage caused by a natural hazard, SumExtra can pay up to 10% on top of your sum insured towards the repair or rebuild, as long as you qualify.

On AMP's Comprehensive Everyday Plus Home cover, the policy returned in our scan, SumExtra is included as standard, so the $160.91 a month quote above already carries this benefit. It is an optional add-on on AMP's entry-level Everyday Home cover, and it is not offered on AMP's Home Plan Flexi cover option.

There is one important condition to be aware of. SumExtra only applies if your sum insured is at least AMP's estimated rebuild cost for your home, the information you gave AMP was complete and correct, and you keep that figure up to date whenever your home changes. AMP recommends setting your sum insured from a written rebuild estimate, using a free tool such as the Cordell Sum Sure Calculator or a registered valuer or quantity surveyor, and refreshing it at least every 12 months. In short, SumExtra rewards homeowners who keep their cover accurate, so it is worth a few minutes at each renewal to check your number still stacks up.

Prices move constantly, so compare AMP and other insurers for your home on the Quashed Market Scan (around 90 seconds). Our Ultimate NZ Guide to Contents Insurance (2026) explains how to set your sum insured and what to check before you buy. If you want your AMP cover to go in the $2,000 prize draw, a house and contents policy qualifies, while a standalone contents policy does not.

How much does AMP landlord insurance cost in 2026?

AMP landlord insurance covers a rental property's structure and can be extended to cover landlord-specific risks that a standard house policy does not, such as loss of rent and certain tenant-related damage, which AMP offers as optional add-ons. The moment you move out and a tenant moves in, a standard owner-occupier house policy is no longer fit for purpose, and a claim can be declined for non-disclosure, so landlord cover is the right product for a tenanted home.

In a Quashed Market Scan run on 22 June 2026, AMP quoted $168.87 a month for an Auckland rental property with $700,000 of cover and a $1,000 excess.

The quote was based on this profile:

A point in AMP's favour for landlords: AMP requires property inspections every six months, where several other insurers require them every three months. If you cannot commit to frequent inspections, AMP's lighter requirement can make it the more practical choice. Worth noting on the other side, some of the benefits landlords most want, loss of rent and intentional damage by tenants, are optional add-ons rather than standard inclusions, while AMP's methamphetamine contamination cover (up to $50,000) is a strong standard inclusion.

A new AMP Landlord policy bought during the promotion also goes into the $2,000 prize draw. To understand the risks landlord cover is built for, read Landlord Insurance: The Ins and Outs of Insuring Your Rental and Renting Your Old House in 2026: Why Standard House Insurance Fails.

Who is AMP insurance underwritten by?

AMP's general insurance is underwritten by Vero Insurance New Zealand Limited. That covers AMP's house, contents, car and landlord policies (travel cover is the only exception, arranged separately), so the company carrying the risk and paying your claim is Vero, not AMP itself. When you claim, you contact AMP, and Vero handles the assessment and settlement through its nationwide claims network.

Vero is part of Suncorp New Zealand and the wider Suncorp Group, holds an AA- (Very Strong) insurer financial strength rating from S&P Global Ratings, and paid out more than 97% of its motor, house and contents claims in the five years to June 2024. AMP has been a part of New Zealand's financial landscape for more than 170 years; in 2020 it sold its life insurance business, and today it focuses on KiwiSaver and the everyday general insurance most Kiwis need. In short, an AMP policy pairs a familiar brand with a large, financially strong underwriter.

For the full picture on the underwriter, read our Vero Insurance NZ Review 2026.

AMP insurance prize draw 2026: how do you enter and win?

New AMP Home, Landlord and Car policies bought between 1 May and 24 July 2026 are automatically entered into a draw to win a $2,000 gift card. Here is everything you need to know, so you do not have to go hunting through the fine print.

How the prize works:

  • There are three separate draws. Each draw gives away one $2,000 Prezzy Virtual Mastercard digital gift card, so there are three winners and a total prize pool of $6,000. Each winner receives $2,000.

  • Draw dates are 29 June, 27 July and 24 August 2026. Eligible entries that are not drawn carry forward to the next draw.

Which policies qualify:

  • Only new AMP Home, Landlord and Car policies qualify, specifically AMP Everyday Plus Home, Everyday Plus Landlord and Everyday Plus Car, plus the AMP Home Plan Home (Maxi) and Home Plan Comprehensive Motor Vehicle policies.

  • Contents-only policies and other cover types (such as business, boat or travel) are not part of this promotion. A house and contents policy qualifies through its Home cover.

How to enter:

  • Compare AMP on the free Quashed Market Scan, then click through to AMP to buy your new Home, Landlord or Car policy online at amp.co.nz (or buy over the phone with AMP). Qualifying policies are entered automatically, with nothing extra to do.

  • To be eligible you must be a New Zealand resident aged 18 or over, the policy must be new (not a renewal, replacement or transfer of an existing AMP policy), and it must stay active for at least 30 days.

That is the full rundown, but you can confirm anything on AMP's promotion terms and conditions page. Comparing on the Quashed Market Scan first lets you check AMP's price against the market, so the gift card comes on top of a premium you are happy with.

AMP insurance pros and cons

With Vero behind it, AMP pairs a familiar brand with an established underwriter. Here is how the pros and cons stack up for house, contents and landlord cover.

Pros

  • Strong, financially secure underwriter: AMP's policies are underwritten by Vero (AA- Very Strong, S&P), which paid out more than 97% of its motor, house and contents claims in the five years to June 2024.

  • Consistently competitive pricing: AMP is among the most competitively priced insurers for house, contents and landlord cover, based on Quashed comparison data, and is often one of the cheapest options for these policies in 2026.

  • Full replacement cover available: SumExtra adds full replacement cost cover, or up to 10% extra of your sum insured for natural hazard loss, on house policies.

  • Flexible landlord inspections: AMP requires landlord inspections every six months rather than the three-monthly schedule some insurers require, which suits busy or remote landlords.

  • Easy to compare, buy and manage online: compare AMP on Quashed, buy online at amp.co.nz, and there is a $2,000 prize draw on new Home and Landlord policies right now.

Cons

  • Some benefits are optional or excluded: on the Everyday Plus home quote we ran, excess-free glass cover was not included, so check what is standard versus optional for your policy.

  • Key landlord covers are add-ons: loss of rent and intentional tenant damage are optional extras on AMP's landlord policy rather than standard inclusions.

  • No life cover: AMP sold its life insurance business in 2020, so if you want life cover you will need another provider.

Is AMP insurance good?

Yes. AMP is one of the most competitively priced insurers for house, contents and landlord cover in New Zealand, and its policies are backed by Vero's AA- (Very Strong) financial strength and a claims record of more than 97% paid. With a live $2,000 prize draw on new Home and Landlord policies, there is extra value on the table right now.

No insurer is the best fit for every household, so the smart move is to compare AMP against the wider market. In Q1 2026, Quashed users found average savings of $908 a year on house insurance. See where AMP sits for your home, contents or rental in around 90 seconds with the Quashed Market Scan.

AMP insurance FAQs

How much is AMP house insurance per month?

In our June 2026 Quashed Market Scan, AMP quoted $160.91 a month to insure an Auckland home for $700,000 with a $1,000 excess. Your premium depends on your home, location, sum insured, excess and claims history, so the best way to see your price is to compare AMP on the free Quashed Market Scan.

Does AMP house insurance cover natural disasters and earthquakes?

Yes, in two layers. Natural hazard damage (earthquakes, landslips, volcanic activity, tsunami and the like) is first covered by Natural Hazards Cover (NHCover) from the Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake (formerly EQC), up to $300,000 for your home, funded by the levy built into your premium. If the damage costs more than $300,000, AMP's policy covers the rest up to your sum insured, and when you claim, AMP's underwriter Vero coordinates with the Commission on your behalf. A $5,000 natural disaster excess applies to parts of your home NHCover does not cover, and storm or flood water damage is covered, though gradual wear such as a slowly leaking roof is not.

What does AMP's SumExtra benefit cover?

SumExtra is AMP's additional cover that can pay out above your sum insured at claim time. If your home is damaged or destroyed by something other than a natural hazard, such as fire, it covers the full cost of rebuilding, even if that is more than your sum insured. If the loss is caused by a natural hazard, it can add up to 10% on top of your sum insured. SumExtra comes standard on AMP's Comprehensive Everyday Plus Home cover, but you only qualify if your sum insured matches AMP's rebuild estimate for your home and you keep it current. To check AMP's price for your home, compare on the free Quashed Market Scan.

How do I get an AMP insurance quote?

The quickest way is to compare AMP on the free Quashed Market Scan. You enter your details once and see AMP's real-time price alongside other NZ insurers, with policy benefits side by side, in around 90 seconds, then click through to AMP to buy. You can also get a quote directly at amp.co.nz or over the phone with AMP.

What is the AMP prize draw and how do I enter?

AMP is giving away three $2,000 Prezzy Virtual Mastercard gift cards (a $6,000 prize pool, with $2,000 per winner) across three draws on 29 June, 27 July and 24 August 2026. New AMP Home, Landlord and Car policies bought between 1 May and 24 July 2026 are entered automatically. To enter, compare AMP on the Quashed Market Scan, then click through to AMP and buy a qualifying policy. You must be a NZ resident aged 18 or over, the policy must be new, and it must stay active for at least 30 days.

Is AMP cheaper than other insurers for house and contents?

Often, yes. Quashed comparison data consistently shows AMP among the most competitively priced insurers for house, contents and landlord cover, and in 2026 it is frequently one of the cheapest options for these policies. Pricing still depends on your property, location and profile, so the way to confirm AMP is your best price is to compare on the free Quashed Market Scan.
